Attributed to Gillis van Valckenborch
(Antwerp c. 1570–1622 Frankfurt am Main)
Cavalry engagement with war elephants in front of a fortification (probably a depiction of the Battle of Alexander at Issus),
oil on canvas, 169.5 x 213.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, Southern Germany
We are grateful to Dr. Alexander Wied, for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Gillis van Valckenborch following examination of the original.
Gillis van Valckenborch was the son of the painter Martin van Valckenborch and the brother of Frederick van Valckenborch. Scenes from Greco-Roman history and mythology are typical of his art. His Mannerist figures mostly appear in crowds, against the backdrop of dramatically clouded skies. In terms of composition and orchestration, the present painting is closely related to Gillis van Valckenborch’s Sennacherib’s Defeat at Jerusalem from 1597, now in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum in Braunschweig.
